Redesign & Design Library
Ed Tech: Illustrative Mathematics
Illustrative Mathematics, a nonprofit organization founded on the belief that all students are capable of learning grade-level mathematics, needed a redesign to make their curriculum easier to use for educators.
I conducted a research study to understand the unique constraints specific to this curriculum. Using those findings, I helped design the site. I also created a design library for the developers to use as they create new features.
UX Content Research
Utility: Fortune 500 Electric Company
This utility company wanted a content strategy that would appeal to the surrounding communities and encourage more people to apply for high paying technical jobs like line workers.
I designed the mixed-method research study as well as a content library that could be used in different contexts.
More Select Work
Healthcare: Clinical Research

Added: visuals, a progress indicator, clearer copy

Incorporated visuals and best practices including: spacing, radio buttons instead of checkboxes, and field labels.

Created a readable graph that accurately compares the time spent bottle feeding vs G-tube feedings. Added a summary so people can get information at a glance.

Added: visuals, a progress indicator, clearer copy
Mobile app that allows clinical researchers to track trial results and helps the participants adhere to research protocol. The app needed to be updated for consistency.
Research Audit
-
Identified and improved inconsistencies between common components
Design
-
Ongoing engagement that worked to implement usability standards, friendly visuals, and a more accessible color palette
Ed Tech: Health & PE Curriculum

Key findings are delivered with supporting evidence from the research

Insights into participant context of use

Key findings are delivered with supporting evidence from the research
Ed tech company created a platform for students taking health education classes. Before finalizing visual design, they wanted to test the content and interactions with teachers.
Usability Research
-
Created scenario based usability studies with health & PE educators
-
Crafted recommendations, complete with videos of participants from the study, for next steps in the design
Healthcare: Electronic Medical Record
A company that specializes in electronic medical records (EMR) for the military wanted to build an easy to use EMR for civilian healthcare professionals.
As lead researcher, my work included:
-
Mapping assumptions with product leaders and technical team
-
Prioritizing research efforts based on sprint goals
-
Conducting contextual interviews with providers to understand workflow
-
Conducting card sorting activities with providers to establish EMR hierarchy
-
Usability testing with prototypes Creating a component library with documentation
News & Media: Mobile App

Part of the content strategy was when to show the paywall and how to present it.

Actions for the articles, how much summary should be included, and how to categorize content

Historic print organization wanted a way to stand out among other journalism competitors and reach a younger, digital native audience.
Research Workshop
-
Brought stakeholders together from different departments to understand the challenges the company currently faces
-
Worked on a future-proof vision for the company
-
Established what to focus on for the research sprint
Competitive Analysis + Audit
-
Audited current offerings to create a detailed list of assets in production
-
Created a detailed analysis of competitor mobile workflows to identify possible opportunities for differentiation
Usability Research
-
Determined the most appealing features of a potential app using a prototype and interviews with the target audience
-
Developed a new digital strategy based on our research & discussions with stakeholders
Sustainability: Mobile App & Strategy

Participants used a chat interaction to complete a scenario

Participants walked through how to complete an action in a competitor's app

A start-up wanted to help the "moderately climate concerned" incorporate sustainability practices into their daily routines but were not sure what type of product would work best.
Competitive Analysis + Audits
-
Created a detailed look at what "green" apps currently exist and how much traction each has
-
Highlighted competitor strengths and weaknesses for potential partnerships
Usability Research
-
Recruited a diverse group of participants that met the "climate concerned" criteria for contextual interviews and a cognitive walkthru with one of the competitor's apps.
-
Performed A/B testing with two prototypes that approached grocery shopping with different techniques to gauge interest
Product Strategy
-
Recommended first partnering with an existing team that is working toward the same goal and could benefit from more resources
Othering: An Audio Documentary
An exploration of how design can bring very different people together and promote tolerance. Research focused on:
Design as a tool for tolerance
Repeated and benign exposure to new perspectives can create tolerance for others. What kind of experience could facilitate this?
How place influences our views
The rural / urban divide is a common framework for dividing people into camps. How can we highlight shared experiences among different place based communities?
Sound design as documentary
Design can take place in many mediums. How can I break away from stereotypes while still creating a compelling but universal story?
